Karl Popper

Sir Karl Popper was one of the greatest philosophers of the 20th century. He made important discoveries about the nature of scientific knowledge and how it grows, and for knowledge generally. He coined the term 'the open society' and analysed what makes it better than closed, tyrannical societies. He advocated fallibility, problem-solving, rationality and the open society, and was an opponent of relativism, inductivism, revolution and tyranny.

Popper opposes grounding political philosophy on 'who should rule', and epistemology on 'justified true belief'. He also avoids argument about words or definitions.
