Tablet PC Goodness

I'm intending to get a tablet PC at some point. I'm hoping the tablet Mac rumours will pan out. If not, I'm looking at a Motion LE1700 (unless the Scribbler comes back in stock -- what a beauty).

If anyone has suggestions or advice (or is selling one in the UK), please leave me a comment. :)

Trades Update

So that I don't forget all the art trades and so on that I'm planning to do, I've decided to make a list of them. If I'm missing any, let me know and I'll update the list.

I've got an old Motion m1200 slate and it's a beautiful, beautiful device, even though it's far less shiny than the LE1700 ;)

I can also put in a thumbs up for the Acer travelmate tablet PCs, *SpookyRuthy swears by hers.

That's very helpful, thank you! I'll check out the Acer, though a quick google search says it's a convertible, and therefore probably a bit heavy for what I want it for.

About your Motion slate: what are the screen viewing angles like? Does it change colour much when viewed from different angles? I only had a brief encounter with a Motion LE1700 in real life, so I didn't get a good look at it.

What's beautiful about it, and how has the LE1700 improved on it?

They are convertibles, yeah -- the one she has is a 12" one and really light but the current models are all larger, so they have gotten kinda heavy.

Ah, sadly the viewing angle on mine is rather poor in portrait mode, the colours change after more than about 10-15 degrees, but landscape is fine - the brightness changes at more extreme angles but that's all.

The battery life when doing lightweight stuff, drawing in sketchbook or browsing pictures etc is lovely, 2-3 hours even on the old battery I have. Anything more intensive, like detailed photoshop work, it gets pretty hot on one end and the battery only lasts about an hour, hour and a half.

It's basically light, handy and straightforward, it's a screen with about 4 buttons on one end, everything else is hidden on the sides. Mine's definitely the cheap option, none of the ports have covers and from the bottom it looks kinda ugly but I don't look at that side ;)

Drawing is essentially the same as any tablet I've used, the sensitivity is nice, could do with more configurable buttons for holding down modifier keys in photoshop but eh.

I've got a fast card reader plugged in the PCMCIA slot and it's become my uber photo downloader/viewer slate, and it makes for a very overpowered Satnav system with a GPS plugged in and Google Earth running ;)

I haven't seen the LE1700 in person but from the website alone it's a lot more powerful with a lot more bells on - mine's only USB1.0, slower processor/ram/network/etc. It also looks like the LE1700 optionally comes with a screen designed for better viewing angles and outdoor use.

Do you find that yours is fast enough for heavy Photoshop use? That's one of the things I was concerned about: the LE1700 only has a 1.2-1.5ghz processor (depending which model you get), and I'll probably have large files with lots of layers. Does it get laggy?

Would you say it's not really usable for painting/drawing in portrait mode, due to the colour shift?

Yeah, I fully intend to get a tablet with an outdoors-viewable screen. When I was having a look at the LE1700 in real life, apparently it was one of the outdoors-viewable models, but sadly I didn't note what the viewing angles were like beyond 'it's different from my Mac'. -_-;

RAM's usually more important for keeping photoshop happy, mine does slow down if I'm using a bunch of layers but it's only a 800mhz processor with 512mb (upgraded!) of ye olde sdram ;) For what it is I'm actually impressed it can do as much as it can, my old desktop of similar spec wouldn't have kept up.. It'll help if you don't mind sticking it on a little laptop cooler too (the ones that're basically a sheet of corrugated metal with a fan or two in it), since the processor slows down when it gets hotter.

Ruth's Acer Travelmate C110 is 1GHz/512MB ddr ram and she definitely abuses photoshop without too much hassle XD

Painting portrait on mine is probably tricky, lineart is definitely fine -- it's something you can and do get used to (it can really freak your eyes out at first) and as long as you're looking dead-on it's good, but I'd guess if you wanted to take colouring/painting seriously it might save your sanity to stick with landscape.. On the other hand the one you're looking at claims to be a lot better, whereas mine's about 5-6 years old ;)

I just took a bunch of photos to give you an idea, there's a few reflections making it look worse than it is but you get the general gist. A little left and right (in portrait) is okay but anything more goes into overly bright/dark all the way into negative. Up and down loses contrast in the high angles but generally is pretty good. I'd have rather it be the other way around as I like showing photos portrait and not letting people see from the sides is a pain..

I certainly wouldn't mind one ;)

Thanks so much for all your help! The photos were good examples. I've heard the newer screens on the LE1700 are better, though that's just going by word of mouth.

I really would like to go with the LE1700, but I might have to get a roductDisplayBundle?IsBundle=true&GroupID=37&Code=X61_tablet_WWAN&OID=:00000025:00000165:&;PID=CNETDFX61_tablet_WWAN&"Lenovo X61t instead (a convertible that's pretty similar to the LE1700 in specs). ... It's around £600 cheaper, you see. ._.

I'm trying to find a way to justify spending £600 on something that's easier to carry/less bulky to draw on. And so far, failing, but I'm going to try the convertible out in real life soon, so I should have a better idea then.

Thanks again. :)

Oh I have to say, the Scribbler looks really pretty. :flirty:

Although a tablet Mac would be the definition of a sexy computer.

I suspect the tablet Mac rumours will just turn out to be a touch-screen computer, which is pretty useless for drawing. Also, the rumours say "Smaller than a MacBook, larger than an iPhone" -- I'm not sure if that will be good enough for drawing. But, we'll see.

Looks like it'll be quite small. :lmao:

A touch-screen computer would just be a shame though. :/
